Here is my own character design concept that I came up with for the 3D modelling contest. I decided to go for a pixie/sprite based fantasy character, with a harp as her chosen accessory.

I wanted to make the character as unique as possible with some of my own ideas while making sure she was fundamentally still a pixie, if not a slightly abstract one.

The general concept behind my design is that her body will be hollow and formed of thorny vines and brambles to create a structure that will form her overall body shape. The rest of her body is made up of bits and pieces you would find lying around in the forest such as twigs for her legs, a japanese style maple leaf for her wings, a harp made from a piece of bone and her dreadlocks are made from small leaves and moss. All of these pieces are held together by her magic and only her face and hands take human form. I am planning to make her glow from inside her torso when it comes to creating the lighting to represent the magic within her and to create some nice lighting on the surrounding model.

I decided to give her a harp as I figured it would be a good way for her to communicate with other pixies in her group and to lure lost travellers into her mystical forest 🙂

Next I'll be sketching up her front, side and back poses and then I will start a first blocking pass of her basic body shape before moving onto her head. Then I'll start on the tricky process of creating the vines to wrap around her body. and go on from there.

Thanks for looking,

Dave

I spent this evening drawing up the basic anatomy for my pixie. I may not keep these exact proportions for the final model, but I imagine they won't be too far off. These sketches just give me a solid reference as a starting point to start modelling from. The majority of the base model will be transparent but it will provide me with a decent guide to start modelling the vines around.

Probably a good time to admit I only started 3D modelling back in October and I have never modelled a character before, so a lot of this I am learning as I go. Got my planes imported into Maya and just started blocking out the basic shape of my character using a low poly mesh and a bit of smoothing. Hoping to get the hands and basic head/face shape sorted by the end of the week and then I will start working on the face in some more detail. Any tips/advice going forward would be appreciated 🙂
